Center for Architecture Foundation

The Center for Architecture Foundation (formerly known as the New York Foundation for Architecture) works to promote the understanding and appreciation of the built environment and administers two education programs, Learning By Design: NY (LBD:NY) and Youth & Family Programs @ the Center for Architecture. LBD:NY promotes built environment education in New York City public schools and encourages children to investigate their surroundings. Outreach efforts target low-income and racially and ethnically diverse communities. Youth & Family Programs @ the Center for Architecture engage young people in architecture and design workshops relevant to contemporary topics in the built environment and related to the Center for Architecture exhibits.

In-school programs: Learning By Design: NY architects, designers, and historic preservationists introduce architecture and design concepts into a variety of disciplines, including history. LBD:NY educators work with teachers to design and implement curricula that ask students to reenvision their physical environments. Activities include research projects that incorporate primary and secondary resources, historic site visits, neighborhood walks and design challenges. Classroom residencies, which can be arranged for up to 10 sessions, address topics ranging from New York City architecture and how buildings work to building visual literacy through architecture education, mapping, and urban design. (Grades K–12; $)

Professional development: Workshops introduce the key elements of architectural design and structure through hands-on activities and address topics in design, preservation, neighborhood history, and community studies. Teachers learn strategies for using architecture and design to cultivate students' observation skills, critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity. (For teachers of K–12; $)
