Gateway National Recreation Area–Fort Wadsworth
Gateway National Recreation Area spans a combined 26,000 acres in New York and northern New Jersey. Within the Staten Island section of the park stands Fort Wadsworth, which served as a critical defensive garrison at the mouth of New York Harbor for nearly 200 years. The fort boasts a unique view of the New York City skyline and hosts exhibits describing the development of artillery.
On-site programs: Ranger-led tours discuss the relationship between the fort and the city it was built to defend, New York City's role in the Civil War, the daily life of a soldier, and the technology behind 19th-century weapons. Pre- and postvisit activities are available. A previsit workshop is required for all teachers. (Grade 4; free)
In-school programs: Park rangers are available to discuss the history of Fort Wadsworth. Classroom programs include a 12-minute video. (Grade 4; free)
