Lefferts Historic House Museum

Local judge, prominent landowner and slaveholder Pieter Lefferts built his homestead between 1777 and 1783, when Flatbush was a rural village of about 900 residents. The next four generations of Lefferts lived in the same house, which currently serves as a museum that incorporates 1820s period rooms and hands-on exhibits to illustrate 19th-century farm life.

On-site programs: School groups focus on topics including past land use as demonstrated with crops in the Lefferts garden; images, artifacts, and reproductions in the house; stories from Femmetie Lefferts's youth in the 1770s that recount the lives of actual Flatbush residents; and basic quilting skills. Teachers can choose between informal or structured programs. (Grades 2–6; call or see website for information on age-specific programs; $)
