New York City Fire Museum

From a Farnam-style, hand-pumped engine to four-wheeled hose reels, from a horse-drawn 1901 LaFrance steam engine to speaking trumpets, the New York City Fire Museum maintains a collection of artifacts pertaining to the history of firefighting in NYC from the 18th century to today. The museum website contains a chronology of the major fires and firefighting developments in New York City history, such as the Triangle Shirt Waist Company fire.

On-site programs: Guided tours led by retired FDNY firefighters emphasize lessons in fire prevention, illustrate the role and duties of firefighters, and examine collection objects. A previsit guide is available. (Grades K–5; $)
