New York City Municipal Archives

From 1684 criminal justice records to present-day census information, the New York City Municipal Archives gathers and provides access to more than 150,000 square feet of material from more than 100 city agencies. Collection highlights include papers from mayoral administrations since 1849, photographs of every building in the city circa 1940, and papers of Robert Moses that reflect the city's mid 20th-century infrastructure. The archives are a significant resource for genealogy research. The permanent exhibit Windows on the Archives displays selected materials from the collection.

On-site programs: While the archives do not offer formal tours, visits from individual teachers and students can usually be accommodated.
