ArtsConnection

Through customized artist residency programs, workshops, and performances, ArtsConnection brings music, theater, and dance as well as the literary, visual, and media arts to public school students throughout the city.

In-school programs: A Brooklyn Bridge project explores the concepts and functions of bridges and examines monuments from throughout the world. Community mural projects research a chosen theme and create wall paintings that convey the past, present, and future of a given location. Music programs incorporate lessons on the Harlem Renaissance, studying songs such as "Take the A Train." Theater programs include playwriting exercises that focus on community, and dance offerings reflect different ethnicities found in New York. (Grades K–12; call for grade-specific programs; $)

Professional development: Teacher training offerings range in format from two-hour to daylong workshops and can incorporate materials on New York City history such as using photographs of famous New York City locations or individuals as a launching point for character studies.
