Big Onion Walking Tours

Led by guides who are all doctoral candidates in American history and related fields, Big Onion Walking Tours traverse streets and neighborhoods to narrate and analyze the history of New York City from colonial to contemporary times.

On-site programs: Two-hour neighborhood tours include visits to the Lower East Side with an emphasis on immigrant history; the Lower East Side with stops to taste traditional cuisine from the Dominican Republic, Eastern Europe, China, Italy, and more; Brooklyn Heights and the Brooklyn Bridge; Greenwich Village; Lower Manhattan; Ellis Island; Gramercy Park and Union Square; Green-Wood Cemetery; TriBeCa; Park Slope; SoHo and NoLiTa; Times Square; the Upper East Side; the Upper West Side; the Bowery, Central Park, the East Village; and the Financial District. Numerous tours focus on specific ethnicities in areas such as Harlem and Chinatown, and the Jewish and Irish history of the Lower East Side. Specialized thematic tours examine such topics and areas as the role of immigrants and the labor movement in New York City; gay and lesbian history in Greenwich Village; significant sites in the Revolutionary War, the area formerly known as Five Points and its relation to the Miramax movie The Gangs of New York; sites connected to American presidents; tales surrounding premieres, inventions, and discoveries that occurred in New York; and locations that have figured in both military and pacifist movements.
